Thermostats, schedules and weather compensation: understanding your heat pump controls

A clear handover helps you use the system without changing settings blindly. These are the functions worth understanding.

Ask for an explanation of your particular installation

Commissioning day often brings several things together: finishing work, documents and a demonstration of the controller. Set aside time to learn what you will actually use. The demonstration should relate to the installed equipment and the zones in your home, rather than every option shown in a catalogue.

Start with three simple actions: identifying the active mode, checking the chosen temperature and finding the schedules. If there is more than one controller, note where each task is carried out. A short guide agreed with the installer can be more practical day to day than trying to memorise every screen.

Distinguish room temperature from water temperature

The room setpoint is the temperature wanted in a room or zone. The temperature of the water circulating through the system serves a different purpose. Different values on the controller do not necessarily indicate a fault: they may represent different measurements.

Ask for each reading to be identified and for an explanation of which settings are intended for users. It is also useful to know which sensor represents each zone. If the living room is comfortable but a bedroom is not, describe that difference before changing several system values. Altering setpoints and installation parameters together makes it harder to understand what is happening.

Weather compensation relates outdoor conditions to water temperature

Where an installation uses weather compensation, the controller adjusts an operating temperature according to the outdoor temperature, following a configured relationship. It is a way of adapting operation to changing conditions. Whether and how it is used depends on the equipment and design.

You do not need to learn to adjust the curve to live in your home. You should, however, know whether it is active and whom to contact about persistent discomfort. Explain whether the problem occurs in mild weather, on cold days or in particular rooms. That record gives the professional more information than randomly increasing values based on a video.

Set schedules around your routine and the installed system

Schedules should make sense for the home and its emitters. A house occupied all day is used differently from one that is empty until the afternoon. Ask for suggested operation based on those routines and find out what happens when you make a temporary change.

Check how to return to the normal programme, how to manage days with a different routine and whether hot water has its own schedule. Avoid copying another household's settings without considering the whole system. Also distinguish stopping a demand at the controller from switching off the equipment's main power supply: shutdown instructions depend on the installation.

Establish a simple way to refine day-to-day operation

During the first few days, record the zone, time, setpoint and how comfortable it feels whenever something is not right. If the manual allows a user adjustment, make one change at a time and observe its effect as explained at handover. Leave technical menus and protective functions out of these trials.

Keep the model's manual and instructions for accessing any app. Check that everyone living in the home understands the basic controls. A well-explained installation reduces contradictory changes and makes it easier to ask for help with useful information when the configuration needs review.

More common questions

Are all air source heat pumps controlled in the same way?

No. Menus, sensors and functions depend on the equipment and how the installation was designed. Use the manual for your particular model.

Can I copy the weather compensation curve from another home?

That is not a suitable basis for setting it. The curve should suit the emitters, home and operating conditions. If comfort is inadequate, record the behaviour and ask for the settings to be reviewed.
